James O'Brien tries to make sense of Donald Trump's address to the Israeli Parliament yesterday, as well as Benjamin Netanyahu's 'sycophancy' directed towards the U.S. President. During his address to the Knesset, Trump declared that the 'long and painful nightmare is finally over', with Israeli MPs praising the President with cheers of 'Trump, Trump, Trump'. The speech was delivered on the same day that the last 20 living Israeli hostages were released by Hamas, as the first phase of Trump's peace plan. James O'Brien notes the 'extraordinarily choreographed' nature to the speech and the 'triumph' of the moment. O'Brien also points out the lack of 'acknowledgement' of the 'two-sides of suffering in the settlement', as Benjamin Netanyahu did not mention the casualties in Gaza. Instead, the Prime Minister and Donald Trump emphaised how the day was a 'victory' for Israel. James O'Brien also speculates on the ulterior motive of Netanyahu's 'sycophancy' towards Trump, pointing towards his own possible political motivations. Altogether, he concludes that the speeches by both men are 'conflicting and contradictory'.
