01:04 Putting Calcium Carbide Stone with water inside the welding chamber 03:02 Welding a 15 years old car silencer pipe using gas welding. After putting the Calcium Carbide Stone with water inside the welding chamber a minimum of 2 minutes is required to produces acetylene gas (C2H2) and calcium hydroxide (Ca(OH)2). If without waiting for a few minutes gas welding is done cracking occurs while welding as can be seen in this video. The reaction is: CaC2 + 2H2O → C2H2 + Ca(OH)2. Acetylene is a highly flammable gas that burns with a very hot flame, making it ideal for welding and cutting metals. Besides welding, calcium carbide is used in organic synthesis, and as a desulfurizer in the iron and steel industry. Calcium carbide reacts violently with water, producing flammable acetylene gas, so it's important to handle it with care and store it properly. Carbide is much harder than steel and much more resistant to heat. Although a carbide-tipped tool is more expensive than a comparable tool which has steel cutting edges, carbide is more economical because it lasts much longer. Carbide gas welding also known as oxy-acetylene welding which does not require electricity; instead, it uses the heat generated by burning a mixture of oxygen and acetylene gases to melt and join metals. The primary heat source in gas welding is a flame produced by the combustion of a fuel gas (like acetylene) with oxygen. Gas welding is one of the oldest forms of heat-based welding, which uses oxygen and fuel gas to join metals. Gas welding uses the concept of generating heat from the combustion of oxygen and fuel gas. Gas supply stored in high-pressure cylinders flows through the flexible hoses (an oxygen hose and a fuel gas hose) as can be seen in this video by adjusting the gas regulators. The gases are combined in the mixing chamber of the hand-held oxy-fuel torch and exit through the orifice in the tip. #repair #gaswelding #weldingmachine
