LORD LOVAT'S LAMENT is a traditional 4-4 slow march or lament which appeared in the late 1800's in published collections by Glen, Bett's, Henderson & Ross in a variety of signatures including 2-4, 3-4 and 4-4 time. Originally titled Lord Lovat's March or Slow March, it only later became better known as Lord Lovat's Lament. The tune borrows the title and perhaps a slight bit of the melody from the older piobaireachd composed by David Fraser in the 1700's. The tune's namesake was Simon Fraser, 11th Lord Lovat, a Jacobite executed for treason in 1747. The tune is associated with Lovat's final walk from the Tower of London for his execution. As an aside, his descendent, Brigadier Simon Fraser- 15th Lord Lovat, lead British Commandos ashore at Sword Beach on D-Day. He defied regulations by ordering his personal piper, Canadian Private Bill Millin, to play the bagpipes as they landed under fire.
