Yet fatigue is one of the most common complains of those with ADHD. Can these opposing sentiments be reconciled? Fatigue is distinct from sleepiness/drowsiness/sedation although the two often co-occur. Fatigue is the feeling of decreased energy so that one can’t perform to the best of one’s ability. Researchers have devised objective ways to measure both peripheral (muscle) fatigue, and central (brain fatigue). Serotonin, tryptophan, and dopamine all play roles in the perception of fatigue. With many tasks, those with ADHD may be activating a greater number of brain regions than those without ADHD. This may cause depletion of energy resources, contributing to fatigue. Stimulants, and many other ADHD medications can alleviate fatigue. Ongoing studies suggest branched chain amino acids may be another way to alleviate fatigue in those with ADHD. ----- Free link to my article on Fatigue and ADHD: https://medium.com/wise-well/dont-con... Subscribe if you're curious about how neuro-atypical brains can optimize their functioning in our shared, and somewhat strange, world. Dr. Kruse has posted talks in both the "live" and the "video" sections of this channel.
