Filmed on April 3,2022, in Kanglu Village (Kangle & Lujiang), Guangzhou. If Guangdong Province is a giant,then its dense urban villages are the “stomach” that digests hardship and fuels prosperity. The Kanglu area, about 5 square kilometer next to the city’s central axis, was once home to tens of thousands of garment factories and over a hundred thousand migrants. “Handshake buildings,” narrow alleys, day laborers, and the hum of machinery formed the foundational, indispensable ecosystem of this megacity. While tales of demolition and sudden wealth circulate,what persists are the traces of ordinary people who left their hometowns to trade labor for a future. Wandering here is like reading a living “Along the River During the Qingming Festival”—it’s chaotic, crowded, yet brimming with raw vitality. Through the lens of a “humble child,” this is not an “irrational, ugly space,” but a field of practice where all lives are equal, intertwined with struggle and hope.
