About the Speech: In his latest book, Turbulent and Mighty Continent: What Future for Europe?, Lord Giddens provides a fascinating analysis of the development of the European Union. He traced EU integration from the incremental ‘Monnet method’ to a situation where many important decisions are made by ‘shadowy’ informal networks of mostly the larger Member States. He made a number of strong recommendations for the future of the EU as a ‘community of fate’, including the direct election of a European President and an end to what he calls the Union’s ‘flight from power’. About the Speaker: Lord Giddens is an eminent sociologist who’s ideas have had a profound impact on British and European politics. He is Emeritus Professor of the London School of Economics, where he was Director from 1997-2003. Lord Giddens is also a Labour Life Peer and a Life Fellow of King’s College, Cambridge.
