Henry Purcell (1659–1695) is one of the greatest Baroque composers and a true pillar of British music. Descending from a dynasty of musicians and appointed organist at Westminster Abbey, he created timeless works that shaped English musical identity. Despite the lack of public opera in London, Purcell revolutionized the stage with Dido and Aeneas — the first true English opera — and continued with powerful music for King Arthur, The Fairy Queen, and more. His dramatic style blended humor, passion, and Italian influences, requiring both emotional depth and technical skill from performers. In just 15 years, he composed over 100 secular songs, around 40 duets, and groundbreaking theatre music. He often used the ground bass to heighten emotion, especially in laments like Dido’s Farewell, and brought energy to chaconnes and witty vocal rounds. Though he died young, his legacy endured. Handel himself called him “the greatest genius England ever produced.” -------------------------------------- Painting: Portrait of Henry Purcell after the studio of John Closterman - anonymous (1695 or after) #purcell #henrypurcell #baroquemusic #baroqueplaylist #englishbaroquemusic --- All the music used in the video belong to their respective owners and I or this channel does not claim any right over them.
