After WW1 and the creation of Poland, a new eastern border of Germany appeared on the map. In the 1920s work initially started on fixed defences, such work increased after Hitler came to power. As far as the Pomeranian defences were concerned, they were able to benefit from a line of lakes and swamps. Such constructions were concrete shelters assisted by plans for quickly assembled field fortifications in case of war. These fortifications were largely complete by 1937. The largest shelters had several underground floors (up to 15 m deep), walls over 200 cm thick and ceilings about 190 cm thick. Each of these shelters was armed with two rotary cannons, three machine guns, grenade launchers and a periscope. Inside there were rooms for about a hundred soldiers. The shelters were connected by a system of field fortifications, carefully camouflaged, and they were protected by minefields, barbed wire, fences and anti-tank obstacles After the invasion and occupation of Poland, no further work was done on them. Hitler forbade work on any rear positions so that by the time the Red Army reached this territory in the late winter of 1945, they had been neglected for five years and any fixed weaponry had been stripped. Despite the order from Hitler, some work was performed on maintaining them in late 1944. In 1945, the area you can see in this video was in the zone of operations of the 1st Polish Army, 1st Guards Army and the 3rd Shock army, which were part of the Red Army. The speed of the advance was such that some positions were not even manned. In any case, they proved to be of little value as Polish and Soviet troops just by passed them on their advance northwards to the Baltic Sea.
