They consist of three principal layers: External intercostal muscles Internal intercostal muscles Innermost intercostal muscles They are all supplied by the intercostal nerves, arteries and veins. The fibers of the external and internal intercostal muscles run in opposite directions, giving them different functions, as well. Due to their origins and insertions, the external intercostal muscles aid in forced inspiration, whereas the internal intercostal muscles contribute to the forced expiration.
