The formal name is NM. This is suitable for use in dry, protected areas (ie: inside stud walls, on the sides of joists etc.), that are not subject to mechanical damage or excessive heat. Most newer homes are wired almost exclusively with NM wire. Nearly every home built in the past 40 years is wired with nonmetallic sheathed electrical cable. Better known by the trade name Romex, this cable, made of insulated copper wires encased in a thermoplastic jacket, is easy to cut, bend and snake through walls and floors. Those are key reasons Romex and other brands have replaced metal-armored BX cable and metal conduit in most applications. Nonmetallic sheathed cable comes several ways. Type 12/2 NM is the most common. Three-way switches require a Type 12/3 or 14/3 NM cable. Both contain three conducting wires (black, white and red) and a ground wire. Type UF - for Underground Feed - cable can be buried outdoors and used in damp, corrosive indoor locations. Along with the 25-ft. size, the cable is sold in 50-, 100- and 250-ft. boxed rolls and in bulk. Before choosing any electrical cable, get a permit for any major electrical project from the local building department. And remember that special cable clamps are required to connect nonmetallic cable to electrical boxes. You'll also need cable straps or staples to fasten the cable to wood framing members.
