Both the composer, Ken Warner, and the conductor, John Wilson, really put the BBC Symphony strings through their paces in this highly frenetic number. No wonder the conductor had the string sections take a well-deserved bow at the end! ... It comes from their "British Light Music" concert given in London's Royal Festival Hall in 2011. Ken Warner, a BBC employee during the 1940s and '50s, was an instrumentalist and arranger, as well as a composer, and this is one of his best-known pieces. "Scrubbing" - articulating repeated notes backwards and forwards across the strings - can be very demanding for the players, so the audience duly showed its appreciation for their splendid efforts when they took their collective bow at the end!
