Quill pens come for the wing or tail feather of a large bird like a goose, swan, or a turkey. Quills are still used today but were mainly used between the years 800 to 1800. It was only when the metal pen was invented that quills stopped being used. The preferred type of ink used with quills was called Iron Gall Ink. This type of ink dated back to the Roman Empire and was used by many people through to the 1800s. During the 20th century, new formulas of ink were created to be more waterproof. Iron Gall Ink is still available for purchase today. Types of books which had quills and ink work on them include the oldest, most complete copy of the Bible, which was thought to have been written around the year 350. In addition, other famous documents were created using quills and ink like the Magna Carta, the drawings of Leonardo da Vinci, and the Declaration of Independence. Unlike modern pens and pencils, students should not push the quill down when writing. This will result in having all the ink in the quill spill out on to the paper. Instead, hold the quill at an angle and gently press the point of the quill onto the paper. Continue to write normally on the paper and dip the quill back into the ink when the word being written appears to become faint. Possible practice opportunities for writing with a quill include the following: -writing your name -writing the names of the states -writing the alphabet -writing from 1 to 10
