GWR 150th Anniversary 1985, Railfreight Spectacular with 2857.

During the GW150 Celebrations in 1985 it was decided to have the newly restored GWR 2800 No 2857 haul a selection of the Severn Valley's goods wagons to take part in a Railfreight Spectacular in Newport, South Wales on Tue 10th Sept 1985. The train left the Severn Valley Railway at Kidderminster on the evening of the 9th September heading towards Worcester Foregate Street and then on-wards to an overnight stop over in Hereford before continuing to Newport at dawn. The engine was then placed on display in the down platform alongside a set of modern wagons and the 2800 was joined by 7029 Clun Castle. 7029 Clun Castle took people on a journey to Gloucester and back while 2857 remained on display in Newport and after a slight hiccup with the watering went off to collect it's vintage goods train. After 7029 had returned 2857 hauled it's vintage goods train through Newport station alongside a modern class 56 which hauled a modern freight train. After a period on display 2857 then set off back to the Severn Valley Railway running via Severn Tunnel Junction, Caldicot, Chepstow & Gloucester completing a truly memorable event & one that has sadly never been repeated.
