In this edition of A Conversation In Jazz we talk to the dynamic drummer, educator, band leader and DJ, Mr. John Lamkin III. John Russell Lamkin III is a gifted drummer from Baltimore, Maryland. He inherited his love of music from his father, UMD Jazz Studies Professor and trumpeter John R. Lamkin II, and began playing drums at the age of 4. By 16, John was already an accomplished musician, deejaying and performing locally in Baltimore. Known for his versatility, John's drumming style has earned him recognition among a wide range of renowned artists. He has toured, performed, and recorded with an impressive roster of musicians, including Donald Harrison, Benny Golson, Najee, Brian Simpson, Jon B, Miki Howard, and the late greats Michael Henderson, Chick Corea, Pharoah Sanders, Lionel Hampton, and Abbey Lincoln, to name just a few. John’s remarkable drumming skills, combined with his passion and creativity, have made him a standout performer. His innovative style continues to captivate audiences, making him a sought-after collaborator for both recording and live performances. Jazz is more than music. It is culture. It is the way we communicate. It's a life style. And through sharing the stories we can appreciate the music at a more dynamic level. We hope that by sharing the stories of jazz musicians, artists, educators, presenters, and enthusiasts, we can inspire and attract a new generation of jazz listeners, supporters, and appreciators of this original music.
