Across Africa, women’s bodies have too often been treated as experiments. From sterilizations in Namibia and South Africa to unethical trials in Nigeria, the story is long and painful. But it did not begin in Africa. In the U.S., civil rights leader Fannie Lou Hamer was a victim of what became known as the “Mississippi Appendectomy”, operations that took Black women’s wombs without consent. This video connects that history to Africa’s present struggles, from reproductive control to GMO food and foreign agriculture. Because sovereignty is not only political , it is reproductive, agricultural, and generational.
