This video is the first of a series in collaboration with the "Edoardo Chiossone" Museum of Oriental Art, in which we introduce the traditional Japanese playing cards Hanafuda, and observe the decorative motifs featured on them, which are linked the months of the year and by inspired the natural world and the Japanese literary tradition. Keeping the Hanafuda cards' decorative motifs as inspiration, we search the collection of the "Edoardo Chiossone" Museum of Oriental Art for artworks featuring similar subjects in their decorations. In this video we observe specifically the suits of the deck tied to the months of March, April and May, and observe a variety of beatiful ukiyo-e woodblock prints by Hiroshige, Kikukawa Eizan and Utagawa Kunisada II.
