World Population by Country | 1200-2025

This video visualizes the top 20 countries by population every year from 1200 to 2025. In that time, many world events have occurred that have greatly changed the demographic balance of the world, from the Mongol invasions, to the Black Death, to the European colonization of the Americas, to the Thirty Years' War, to WW1 and WW2. Watch how these events impacted global populations in this video! All population counts are based on the number of people that that state controlled at the time -- including not only the vast colonial empires, but also wartime occupation, provided that the occupying country intended to annex the region rather than liberate it. Most of my data comes from Wikipedia corroborated by Angus Maddison's research, as well as a variety of other region-specific sources, such as Kwan and Shin for Joseon Korea.
