Water flavor drops were thought for a while to be a great replacement for sugar containing beverages to help people improve their metabolic health and weight. Unfortunately, this turns out not to be true. Most of these drops contain non-nutritive artificial sweeteners like saccharine, sucralose, aspartame, etc. (as well as other artificial ingredients). These sweeteners present a problem because they can disrupt the gut microbiome, which can lead to changes in metabolic health. A 2022 article published in ‘Immunometabolism’ states that while study results varied, “several interventional trials suggest a causal link between NAS consumption and worsened glucose tolerance.” So while we thought we are helping people with early diabetes and weight issues, we may actually have achieved the opposite effect here. Other publications describe the negative influence of artificial sweeteners on gut wall immune reactivity, possibly contributing to conditions like inflammatory bowel disease. I have used these flavor drops in the past and have noticed that when I stopped, many G.I. issues that I had experienced resolved. It is also very difficult to predict how much of a particular sweetener is in the drops, and how much we are using on a daily basis. Instructions usually state to use two ‘squirts’ of the drops per 8 ounce glass. This could result in a big quantity of sweetener consumed in a single day. Some flavor drops are now using more natural sweeteners like Stevia. Unfortunately, even Stevia may be linked to disruptions in the gut microbiome. I think it is probably best to forgo these all together. I currently just use a bit of lemon juice to flavor water occasionally. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/arti... https://www.frontiersin.org/articles/... #preventivehealth #drinkingwater #water #waterdrops #waterfilter #avoidinstahealth #waterislife #doctor #healthadvice #healthychoices #md #waterfrop #determination #reverseosmosis #activatedcarbon #healthylifestyle #healthyliving #waterdrop #waterchoice #healthylife #md #avoidchemicals #avoidtoxinsandstayhealthy
