What does life look like for someone who works intimately each day with death? Proud to share my Director’s Cut of “You Can’t Take it With You”, my profile of Victor Sweeney, a funeral director and mortician in rural Minnesota, created initially for "CNBC Make It." In my time with Victor, I aimed to bring out the balance between reverence and realism — from aerial imagery capturing his place in the quiet expanse of Northern Minnesota (Warren, MN to be precise) to carefully crafted interview setups that captured Victor’s introspective and philosophical side, this project pushed my work as a DP/Director (and picking up the raw video to edit and craft my own take on his story in the edit as well). In Warren, Victor’s approach to funeral services is as much about supporting the living as it is about honoring the dead. When asked about his work, Sweeney speaks of helping families transition from grief to acceptance and doing more than just overseeing the arrangements — he often knows the family well enough to write the obituary without needing questions. His genuine approach transforms what could be a distant, procedural experience into one grounded in empathy and shared humanity during one of life’s most vulnerable moments. Victor’s philosophy shines through the labor of love personal work project – hand-carving headstones for several unmarked graves from Warren’s residents from the 19th Century to give them the dignity of a name and awareness. Documentary work, especially when tackling subjects with such inherent weight, demands a careful visual strategy. Here, that meant not only highlighting the unique aspects of Victor’s job but also allowing his values and connection to his community to shine through in the visuals. But don’t think for a second that this is reserved for the world of documentary or isn’t applicable to storytelling at a brand or agency level — Put simply for my marketing communicators, editors and art directors out there: Don’t ever be afraid to take a proper leap in your storytelling and tackle stories with real weight to reach your audience on a human level. #documentary #freelance #DP #sonycine #minnesota #midwest #rurallife #storytelling #documentaryfilmmaking
