A little-known jewel by Fauré for today’s #UriPosteJukebox: the Andante in B flat, Op. 75. We discovered this beautiful piece by accident a few years ago, and found it strangely difficult to find out anything about it. Almost the only information available online is in an excellent program note by Jessica Duchen, who reveals that this Andante is probably reworked material from the slow movement of Fauré’s ill-fated (and never-completed) violin concerto. We have to confess that this is a ‘Jukebox Choice’ — we requested it ourselves, because it’s a piece which deserves to be heard far more, and it felt like exactly the thing we needed to play on an evening we were both feeling rather melancholy. Even in this small miniature, Fauré’s music — serene eloquence enclosing sensuous passions — transports us to another world. More musical magic tomorrow with the fifth of our UriPoste Premieres: an exquisite Gaelic air by Donald Grant.
