The Ocean County Cultural & Heritage, a division of Parks and Recreation, is committed to commemorating the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution (1775-1783) over the next several years. This video was submitted as a project proposal to the National Park Service’s Battlefield Preservation Grant program in March 2022 and outlines Ocean County’s intention to create an “American Revolution in Ocean County Trail.” The Trail will be marked by new interpretive signage and a short documentary video created to share its history. Of the approximately 70 Revolutionary encounters to take place in Ocean County, the following 6 have been identified as the first to be preserved on the “American Revolution in Ocean County Trail” for their embodiment of the region’s bitter civil war: The Affair at Egg Harbor (1778) Manahawkin Skirmish (1781) Toms River Blockhouse Fight (1782) Long Beach Island Massacre (1782) Affair at Cedar Bridge (1782) Death of John Bacon at Rose’s Tavern (1783) Ocean County welcomes this timely opportunity to participate in a more diverse understanding of the nation’s shared history and is committed to sustaining these efforts for future generations.
