At the start of the year, you cannot expect students to perfectly behave. To achieve the ideal classroom, you must work every day to actively teach rules and procedures along with building rapport. You also have to be prepared to address misbehavior immediately and consistently. It’s important to develop classroom management goals and to take responsibility for administering them. When you use the principal or other administrators to take student disciplinary action, this reduces the sense of respect that children will give that teacher. It shows that the real authority lies with the principal, not the teacher. Students are very aware and know if you are being genuine with them. So, when you are truly trying your best to help them with their problems and get to know them, they will be much more likely to observe classroom rules and give you respect. The best thing you can do in a classroom is to set yourself up as a classroom authority in a kind and gentle way.
