Delay effects on the stability of large ecosystems Emanuele Pigani, Stazione Zoologica Anton Dohrn (Napoli) and Laboratory of Interdisciplinary Physics, University of Padova Abstract: Understanding how communities emerge and persist from a large number of interacting entities is a long-standing question in several fields. The interactions among these entities are often assumed to occur instantaneously, but in real world systems the dynamics can be substantially influenced by temporal delays in the interactions. This is particularly true for ecological systems, where the effects of species’ interactions may appear after a time lag rather than instantaneously. In this talk, I will examine how delayed interactions within species affect ecosystem stability, extending the classical stability analyses pioneered by Robert May. By incorporating delayed interactions, I will show that ecosystems can exhibit behaviors not predicted by instantaneous interactions alone. #YSSIFS
