John Mearsheimer is Wrong: Why the War in Ukraine Is Not About NATO

[Sources in description.] John Mearsheimer's 2015 lecture "Why Is Ukraine the West's Fault" got a second wind with the Russian invasion of Ukraine, despite its amoral, rickety realism. His realist view is influencing people on both the left and right to figure that the US and Europe forced Russia to escalate their aggression toward Ukraine all the way to their full-on invasion. He, and Vladimir Pozner, cite NATO expansion as a key element. But Putin had already halted NATO expansion into Ukraine with the invasion of Crimea and the war in Donbas, further invasion would do nothing more to stop it. It was a non-issue, and NATO has only ever been a lesser part of Putin's overall goals and fears. What looks like a murderously insane war of total destruction is, to Putin, an attempt to restore the soul of Russia. He has been taught this by the philosopher who he has revived as the Russian state's main source of ideology. Ivan Ilyin laid the groundwork for warmongering, totalitarian, ultra-nationalist Russia, and Putin is attempting to bring Ilyin's dream into reality. My research sources for the series...
