Fujian Xiang opera (芗剧) "The Teacher, the Thief" (《三家福》) by Zhangzhou City Xiang Opera Troupe (漳州市芗剧团) Su Yi, a private tutor, was on his way back home on the evening of Lunar New Year’s eve, where he chanced upon Madam Shipan attempting suicide. Su Yi stopped her, and upon asking, realised that her family was in debt while her sailor husband had been away for an year without news, and her money had been used up trying to seek treatment for her sick father-in-law. Su Yi pitied Madam Shipan, and to save her from attempting suicide again, he pretended that Shipan had delivered a letter and some money back. He took out his entire year’s salary of 12 taels of silver and passed it to Madam Shipan, who then returned home happily with the money. Back home, Su Yi told his wife what happened on his way back. Madam Su, while happy that her husband had done a good deed, was at a fix, because there was no food left at home, and they had no money left to buy food. She proposed Su Yi to go steal some sweet potatoes, of which Su Yi had no choice but to agree to it. Meanwhile, Madam Liu, who owned a sweet potato field, realised that she had not harvested her crops, and told her son Lin Ji to go patrol their plot of land to prevent people from stealing their sweet potatoes. Lin Ji arrived at their sweet potato field, and decided to take a nap at their Earth God shrine, where he was awakened by Su Yi, who had come to seek the Earth God’s approval for his intended theft. In pitch darkness, Lin Ji overheard Su Yi address his dilemma to the Earth God, and hence decided to help him out. Lin Ji secretly helped Su Yi fill up his basket with sweet potatoes, of which the latter unsuspectedly thought the “miracle” was an act of the Earth God, which he happily carried home for his wife to cook. Lin Ji went home and told his mother about the incident, and Madam Liu decided to help Su Yi out. On the following morning, Madam Liu arrived at Su Yi’s house with festive goodies on the pretext of house-visiting. At the same time, Madam Shipan arrived to ask for her husband’s letter, which Su Yi had previously said had been left forgotten in his school. While Su Yi was at a fix as to how he was going to produce a forged letter, Shipan, who had just returned from sailing, arrived together with his father. The puzzled Shipan had heard from his father about the letter and money which he had reportedly sent back, and hence asked Su Yi about them. Lin Ji stood in to explain the entire story, and everyone realised the good deed Su Yi had done. While Shipan and family werr grateful for Su Yi’s act of chivalry, Su Yi and wife were also grateful for Lin Ji and his mother’s act of generosity.
