Safety advice when using a chiminea from: https://chimineashop.co.uk Transcript: "When using a chimenea always remember that you are using a real fire so you have to take a number of precautions to make sure the fire doesn't spread and damage your property or injure anybody. Remember, therefore, to put the chiminea in a place not near any flammable materials. It is not advised to put chiminea on decking. If you intend to put your chimenea on decking you first need to put a slab of concrete or stone, or a steel sheet, for fire protection. So choose (to put your chiminea on) something like bricks, or stone, or gravel. Do not put it on grass either because grass will turn black or brown -- or even catch fire. It is also advisable to make sure you haven't got any trees or bushes above because the leaves on the trees will turn brown and dry out, and it's a fire risk. Similarly, don't put your chiminea too close to any furniture especially if the furniture is made of texline or plastic because it might melt. Don't put the chiminea under an awning and if you intend to use your chimnea with logs you cannot use your chiminea inside, not even inside a conservatory or within an existing fireplace. In terms of Mexican (clay) chimeneas there are additional advice that you need to follow to make sure you operate a safe fire. First of all, take the lid off. You cannot have a fire with the lid on because the pressure from the flames of the fire might actually make the chiminea explode. With each Mexican chiminea (from Gardeco) you will get a set of instructions in the shape of a little chimnea, read them carefully and keep them safe so you can refer to them from time to time. Mexican chimineas are made from clay which is fragile. If you take this chiminea and drop it on the floor it will break. In order to avoid cracks and to prolong the use of your chiminea we advise putting in 1 inch or 2.5cm, at least, of sand or gravel, or you can use lava stones which is a light weight pumice stone, designed specifically to keep the hottest part of the fire, which is the centre of the fire, away from the clay. So just take the lava stones and drop them into the chiminea, or use sand or gravel, and build your fire on top of that. When you first get your chiminea you need to have a number of small fires before having a big fire. You will do this by using balled newspaper or kindling or ocote sticks for example. And then putting them directly on top of the lava stones or sand and build your fire on top of that. And light it and let the fires burn very small. In fact, never build a fire in a clay chimenea whereby flames come out more than one metre above the chiminea. If you do that it means you are over-firing the chiminea and there is the risk of cracking through what's called thermal shock. Thermal shock is a technical word used with clay whereby as you've got a one piece body of clay, one part of the chiminea is going to get much hotter than the other part and because of that it will create tension in the material which will lead to cracks. If you get cracks vertical around the funnel here it's undoubtedly to do with over-firing. As you fire the chiminea you will notice that the colour will change because slowly the paint will burn off. These chiminea are covered with emulsion type paint, water based paints, and they will change colour as and when fires are made. The mouth here will become black with soot from the fire, as will the top of the chiminea. And eventually if you fire your (clay) chiminea over a long period of time, and frequently, you will find that all chimeneas will turn reddish in terms of the colour. Clay chimineas also ought to be brought inside and covered up for the winter. If you leave them outside they might actually fill with water, and we all know what happens to water when it's freezing, water expands and if your clay chiminea is full of water and it's freezing it will expand and crack the chiminea. So the best precaution for that is to bring it indoors, in a garage or shed, or if you can't do that to cover it with a waterproof cover for the winter."
