Review by Carson Higgins Yasujiro Ozu's 1949 masterpiece Late Spring is one of the top 15 movies on the 2012 Sight and Sound poll of 250 films and only one of two Japanese films in the top 15. The other film is Ozu's other masterpiece, Tokyo Story, coming in at number 3. (For those that have been with us for a while, you'll remember that we watched Tokyo Story in this club last year) Ozu crafted a unique perspective in this family drama about a daughter, Noriko, played beautifully by Ozu regular Setsuko Hara, who is being pressured to marry after years of living with and caring for her widowed father. The father played by another frequent Ozu player, Chishû Ryû. These two bring to life the heartwarming and also heartbreaking tale masterfully constructed by Ozu. With his static camera angles and his knack for developing characters you can't help but fall in love with, Late Spring is a film I won't soon forget and one that I look forward to revisiting in the future.
