We hiked with our new friends from Kuklen. Kuklen was proclaimed a town on 23 May 2006 and as of 2005 had a population of 6,877. The main church in the Monastery "St. Cosmas and Damian" dating from the 15th century, is a cruciform, domeless building with two shallow conches and two vestibules. It resembles a cross in plan, with a large blind dome resting on the entire nave resting on pointed hanging arches. In the 17th-18th c., the church was expanded to the west, and in the 19th century, a new porch was also added as I tried to say in the video. Fragments of the large composition "The Last Judgment" dating from the 17th century have been preserved on the eastern wall of the vestibule. In the nave of the church, the predominant layer of frescoes is from 1862. and include the cycle "The Creation of the World" and a panorama of the holy places of the Mount of Athos. There are also scenes from the lives of the silverless healing saints Cosmas and Damian. The Rhodopes are a mountain range in South-eastern Europe, and the largest by area in Bulgaria, with over 83% of its area in the southern part of the country and the remainder in Greece. Golyam Perelik is its highest peak at 2,191 meters. We hiked with our new friends from Kuklen who have made us feel so welcome in Bulgaria. We had an amazing day hiking and visiting the Kuklen Monastery..... “St.St. Kozma and Damyan”. The Kuklen Monastery “St.St. Kozma and Damyan” is situated about 2,5 km to the southwest of the village of Kuklen in the Chernatitsa part of the Western Rhodopes Mountain, 8km to the west of Assenovgrad and about 15km south of Plovdiv city. The Kuklen Monastery offers accommodation for 50 visitors. However, food is not offered, but there is a dining room providing cooking facilities.
