In this video, I show how I converted an old electric kiln into a gas-fired soda and salt kiln, using a Skutt 1027 electric kiln as the starting point. This is Part 1 of a multi-part series focused on advanced kiln building and atmospheric firing techniques for experienced potters and ceramic artists. This kiln conversion is designed for atmospheric soda, salt, and reduction firing, transforming a standard soft-brick electric kiln into a fully functional gas-fired atmospheric kiln. The build is inspired by Kevin Kowalski’s electric-to-gas kiln conversion design, which was also used by John Potter, but I made several modifications and improvements to better suit my firing goals, materials, and workflow. In this first part of the series, I cover: • Converting a Skutt 1027 electric kiln to gas firing • The fundamentals of electric kiln gas conversion • Planning a kiln for soda firing, salt firing, and reduction • How to coat the inside of a soft brick kiln for soda and salt firing • How to cast and coat kiln interiors for atmospheric firing durability • Design considerations for advanced ceramic firing environments This kiln is built specifically for atmospheric firing, allowing for soda, salt, and reduction effects that are not possible in standard electric kilns. If you’re interested in how to coat soft brick for atmospheric firing, castable kiln linings, or building a budget-friendly gas soda kiln, this series walks through the process step by step. ⚠️ This project is intended for advanced potters and kiln builders. Gas kiln conversions involve serious safety considerations, proper ventilation, and a solid understanding of kiln design and firing principles. If you’re interested in: • Electric kiln to gas kiln conversion • Soda kiln conversion • Salt kiln conversion • Atmospheric firing • Reduction firing • Advanced ceramic kiln builds this series will be right up your alley. 👉 Part 1 focuses on the build and conversion process. Future videos will cover firing results, adjustments, and long-term performance of the kiln.
