"This was torture": George Floyd's family suing city of Minneapolis, 4 former police officers

Attorneys representing the family of George Floyd announced a wrongful death civil lawsuit against the City of Minneapolis and four former police officers involved in Floyd's death. Speaking at a press conference on Wednesday, attorney Benjamin Crump called the incident a public health crisis, railing against the City of Minneapolis and their history of policies and procedures and "deliberate indifference when it comes to the treatment of arrestees, especially Black men, that cries out for training and discipline." Crump said the reason why George Floyd's killing has galvanized people around the globe was that "he was literally tortured to death, not in a third world country, but here in Minneapolis, Minnesota, in the United States of America in 2020." George Floyd, a 46-year-old Black man, died in police custody in Minneapolis, Minn., on Memorial Day. Floyd died after a white police officer knelt on his neck for nearly nine minutes while other officers pinned him to the ground. Floyd’s death sparked weeks of global protests against anti-Black racism and police brutality. The suit names as defendants the city of Minneapolis and four officers who participated in his arrest on suspicion of using a counterfeit $20 at a grocery store. It seeks money for compensatory, special, and punitive damages from the officers and compensatory and special damages from the city.
