About the lecture: The WHO declared a decade of action for road safety in 2011 because 1.3 million people die on the roads every year, and over 50 million suffer disabling injuries. 90% of the burden of road traffic injury and death is borne in developing countries, putting this silent epidemic on par with the traditional concerns of international health such as HIV, malaria, and tuberculosis. Effective interventions exist for child occupants, pedestrians, and cyclists allowing the WHO to predict a potential 50% reduction in road user deaths by 2021. Will we see this potential fulfilled? About the speaker: Andrew Howard, MD, MSc, FRCSC Chief, Division of Pediatric Orthopaedics Director, Office of International Surgery Senior Scientist, Hospital for Sick Children Research Institute Associate Professor, Departments of Surgery and Health Policy, Management, and Evaluation University of Toronto Andrew Howard is a pediatric orthopaedic surgeon who has a large and diverse clinical practice.
