Sonamarg or Sonmarg is a hill station located in the Ganderbal District of Jammu and Kashmir and means meadow of gold. It is located about 62 kilometers from Ganderbal Town and about 90 kilometres northeast of the Srinagar on Laddkh Highway (National Highway NH 1A). The minimum temperature in mid-winter can easily go down to minus 25 Degrees Celsius and even the maximum temperature can hardly go up to minus 7-8 Degrees Celsius. Though snowfall is massive in mid-winter but to comfortably enjoy snowfall it is better to visit in early or late winter in the months of October, November, February or March. Sind river which is a tributary of Jhelum River flows through Sonmarg and whole Sind valley. Road to Sonmarg gradually climbs upwards from Vail bridge alongside the Sind River. You can visit ancient Naranag Temple enroute to Sonmarg. It is worth mentioning that this Sind River is not Indus / Sind River it is only a tributary of Jhelum River.
