The Garmin EchoMap UHD 2 is one of Garmin's top fish finders, but is it worth the price? Let's find out. Cons Not a giant upgrade on the UHD. I typically have a 7" Garmin Echomap UHD on my kayak, and I haven't noticed enough of a difference to upgrade. It is compatible with the same transducer (so the sonar capabilities are very similar). Still, it has a faster processor, a more refined interface, a better GPS receiver, and a few other things that don't necessarily help the average angler catch more fish. Specific screen sizes have different features. The 5" and 6" screens don't have the same features as the 7" and 9" UHD 2's. So, if you need a smaller screen, be prepared for fewer features, but that also means the price is lower. The 5" screen is less than half the price of the 9" screen. Only touchscreen navigation I haven't used it in cold temperatures, so I can't speak for how it responds in cold weather, but I haven't had any problems with how the touch screen responds. However, I still like having navigation buttons as a backup. The only buttons on this are to zoom and shortcuts to your favorite pages/settings. 9" is the largest screen The 9" screen is perfect for my kayak, but it would be a little small if I were fishing in a larger boat. I have poor eyesight, so I wear glasses. However, if you have good eyesight, the 9" screen is easy enough to see. Pros It's not overpriced $1,000 is a lot of money, and many units with similar capabilities cost much more than this fish finder, so while it's expensive, I don't believe it's overpriced. Plus, you can choose a smaller screen, get fewer features, and a much lower price tag. The features help you find fish. I use a fish finder to, well, find fish! This unit has done that. I found a giant school of bait fish, which eventually led me to some crappie, but it was also marking standing timber, brush and rock piles, and depth changes with fish around all of them. Bright screen The bright screen performed well in sunny and cloudy conditions. At some angles, the screen is difficult to see because of the sun's glare, but a minor angle adjustment is all that's needed. Clear sonar The only time my screen was fuzzy was while using Livescope, and that was my fault. (I'm using the same battery for the unit and Livescope; if I used separate batteries, I think that would help clear it up a bit.) However, it wasn't so bad that I couldn't tell fish apart, so it wasn't a big deal to me. Plus, the SideVu, ClearVu, and traditional sonar were sharp. I easily picked out structure that I would have passed by with a lesser unit. Good maps One of the most overlooked features on a fish finder is the maps, but these Navionics Inland maps are great for helping me choose spots to begin fishing. I've found them to be accurate and very helpful for finding some juicy spots. Specs & Features Screen sizes: 5", 6",7", and 9" This one is the 9" Transducers: The 6" and 7" are bundled with the GT54, and the 9" is GT56. Sonar Types: Ultra High-Def Clearvu and traditional Chirp or Ultra High-def Sidevu, clearVu, and traditional Chirp. Livescope compatible Mapping: Worlwide basemap, Garmin Navionics+ Inland, Garmin Navionics+ Coastal, U.S. LakeVU G3, or Bluechart G3 Walk through all the features Who's It For? It's great for the serious angler, but I can see how the price and number of features could be overkill for the average angler. This is the perfect unit for tournament kayak anglers or serious boat anglers fishing in local tournaments.
