How do you hem a mid 19th century skirt? Among the many options, a facing stands out as a very common form of finishing a skirt's edge. It protects the edge of your skirt from getting dirty and weighs down the hem of super light and airy fabrics. Bonus-it only takes 1/2 inch of fashion fabric to do a faced hem. In this video, we explore facings: why Victorians used them, why we should as well, what to use for facing material, and how to put them in. We start of talking about facings-what they are and when to use them-then we move into looking at an original 1850s dress with a facing. Afterwards, I show you each step in putting in 3 facings into 3 different dresses-showing you a slightly different way of doing it each time to show some variety.
