Building horizontal networks of trust research into the motivations of crop users to join tricot as on-farm researchers. Béla Teeken, Social Scientist and Gender Specialist at IITA, and Anna Müller, Senior Scientist at the Alliance of Bioversity and CIAT and lead of the 1000FARMS “Inform Product Management” work package, share insights into why farmers choose to participate as citizen scientists in tricot on-farm trials. Drawing on participatory video in Nigeria, motivation surveys in Rwanda and Nigeria, and co-designed feedback tools, their research shows that farmers are driven by learning, recognition, personal growth, and contributing to their communities rather than material incentives. This presentation highlights how farmer-led storytelling and reciprocal feedback can shift participants from data producers to genuine co-researchers, offering valuable guidance for designing more equitable, trust-based breeding programs and product profiles.
