The Nigeria Civil Society Situation Room has sharply criticised the Senate’s passage of the Electoral Act (Amendment) Bill 2026, denouncing key changes it describes as retrogressive and a threat to electoral transparency. The group, led by convener Yunusa Ya’u and co‑conveners Celestine Odo and Mma Odi, expressed disappointment that the Senate deleted mandatory real‑time electronic transmission of election results from polling units to the Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) Result Viewing Portal, making the process discretionary under the amended bill. Lawmakers also reduced INEC's election notice period from 360 days to 180 days. Political analyst and election observer Achike Chude joins us to unpack the implications of these amendments, why civil society groups are alarmed, and what this means for Nigeria’s democratic credibility as the country heads toward the 2027 general elections.
