If the full criteria for a manic episode is met, the diagnosis of Disruptive Mood Dysregulation Disorder is not given. Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD), Intermittent Explosive Disorder, or Bipolar Disorder cannot be diagnosed at the same time as Disruptive Mood Dysregulation Disorder. Major Depressive Disorder (MDD), Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), Substance Use Disorder, and Conduct Disorder are comorbid with Disruptive Mood Dysregulation Disorder so an individual can have these disorder and Disruptive Mood Dysregulation Disorder at the same time. Disruptive Mood Dysregulation Disorder can be thought of as a more severe version of Oppositional Defiant Disorder. Disruptive Mood Dysregulation Disorder was included in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM), in part, due to the high number of children being diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder.
