Cathal Smyth's Debut Solo Album "A Comfortable Man" Performed Live at "Bush Hall"

I thought I would write about an experience which affected me. Cathal Smyth from the band "Madness" has recently produced a solo debut album called "A Comfortable Man." It was performed a couple of weeks ago in front of a full house in the beautiful chandelire laced venue "Bush Hall." While I was there, I decided to take some footage of the evening. Kirsty Mangan, one of the violin players played a role in arranging some of Cathal's songs and my brother Max Wilson, (composer) is part of his ensemble. You can see him here playing the piano and I am very proud of him. Max went to The Royal Academy Of music and studied composition under Steve Martland. He was in the same year as Joe duddell who you see here playing the drums. Joe is now professor of composition at Bath Spa University. As well as composing contemporary classical music which has reached the proms, he has recently been collaborating with the dubstep band Nero and pop artists such as Elbow, James and Cathal Smyth. Here, Cathal has produced a wonderfully heart felt album, which brings out the man hankies. It is a personal account of the ending of his relationship with his wife. "My heart is in pieces / It's lying broken on the floor / My days are so empty / without you in them any more." We have all suffered from a broken heart. At some point in our lives we have had to let somebody go, or we are currently letting somebody go or we will let someone go who we are deeply in love with and connected to, whether it be through a romantic break up or the death of a loved one. This is part of life's path. Each party spiritually grows through a relationship if it is a healthy one. However, when it feels right to move on, emotionally and physically our bereaving and process towards healing hurts like hell. While life around us goes by and continues, we feel terribly isolated and frozen in our suffering. We feel disconnected, left behind and stuck in a world which is moving by without us. Through my own personal experiences, trying to deal with mending a broken heart in a world perceived by me in this way feels extremely cold and cruel. Here Cathal's positive message on a terribly sad subject is to let us know though that although we feel alone, we are not actually alone, because universally speaking, we are all one in our suffering. As I listen to him singing his poetry, the words are so powerful that they stand out in their own right. In the audience, his lyrics hit raw nerves where he bravely expresses emotions and feelings that our egos prevent us from voicing out loud through fear of judgement, rejection, failure and weakness. He says in an interview. "I am thinking of manufacturing man hankies. Writing and performing this album has been a cathartic experience. People in general are frightened to say how they really feel and it makes it worse to keep it locked down inside." Cathal's poetry is carried by a hauntingly melodic melancholic scape supported by a ten piece ensemble and choir. As I listen to his unique sound and Leonard Cohen kissed voice, I hear influences of David Bowie, Paul MCcartney and Pink Floyd. His overall sound conjures a deep potion of different styles including folk, country, world, and pop. I found the whole experience extremely honest and deeply moving.
