China has a special place in my heart, for solo-travelling. I was first acquainted with Suzhou and Shanghai as a kid when my dad worked here. Back in early 2000s, China was just a place we visited to clock in our yearly school holidays while spending time with family. The country was still developing. In 2018, I decided to take a year to work in a Shanghai as part of my university entrepreneurship program. With so much advancements in technology, offline experiences and ability to roam freely over a year, I fell in love with this city. It is my most solo romantic city to date, where I could cycle to cafes anytime, and roam freely on foot, in the cold winters. The city, for its abundance of people, makes me feel insignificant, just the way I like it. There’s no judgement and no attention, you’re just one of the many, yet still treated with respect from service crews.
