Among the great joys of keyboard music are the 555 Sonatas by Italian composer Domenico Scarlatti. And while the Scarlatti Family ruled long before the legendary Five Families of New York, it dominated its territory at the time. The first Boss of the Baroque was Monteverdi, who started the opera racket as we know it, culminating in the rise to power of “Mean Joe Green” Giuseppe Verdi. But opera before 1700 still wasn’t all that violent. Opera got serious with Opera Seria under Domenico’s father Alessandro Scarlatti, who provided protection for the Da Capo Aria, making Alessandro the “Capo di tutti capi”. In the Godfather, New York underboss Michael Corleone was sent to Sicily to lay low, but since Alessandro’s underboss Domenico was already in Italy, he was sent to Spain instead. And the Sonata in D that I play here shows how Domenico Scarlatti changed the rules of the game: it’s rich in sounds from the Iberian Peninsula. It starts with a trumpet fanfare, then moves on to the lightning-fast repeated notes of flamenco guitar. And only the best marksmen can hit their target in the wicked hand-crossing passages...
