Dozens of people have been killed by flooding, landslides and record winds as Hurricane Melissa tore into Cuba and Haiti, after leaving a trail of destruction in Jamaica. [Subscribe to our Substack newsletter: https://channel4news.substack.com/sub...] The category five hurricane made landfall Tuesday evening, with the parishes of St Elizabeth and St James in the southwest of the island taking the brunt of the impact, directly in the eye's path. At least 20 people died in one Haitian village when a flooded river surged through homes, trapping residents under the rubble. Hurricane Melissa then weakened to a still dangerous category three, before slamming into the coast of Cuba in the early hours of Wednesday morning.
