Located on top of a hill, just 19 km east of Leh, this monastery belongs to the Gelugpa (Yellow Hat) school of Tibetan Buddhism and is often compared to the famous Potala Palace in Lhasa, Tibet. Inside the monastery, I witnessed the magnificent 49-feet Maitreya Buddha statue, which represents the future Buddha – a symbol of compassion and hope. Built to commemorate the visit of the 14th Dalai Lama in 1970, this statue is the largest of its kind in Ladakh and sits in a two-story prayer hall with intricate murals and peaceful ambiance.
