Speaking at the Mutual Fund Summit (LIVE), Trideep Bhattacharya, President and CIO of Edelweiss Asset Management, said that market valuations are currently near their historical mean, unlike the stretched levels seen in September 2024. He explained that a large part of market returns over the past five years was driven by multiple expansion, supported by a structural decline in interest rates. That cycle, he said, has now reversed, with interest rates structurally moving higher globally, exerting downward pressure on valuation multiples. Bhattacharya noted that once interest rates stabilise—a point not yet reached—the scope for nonlinear market returns could emerge. Until then, markets may continue to “muddle through,” driven more by global macro factors than domestic earnings. He added that India has underperformed global and emerging markets by nearly 40% over the past year and has been viewed as an “anti-AI trade.” While absolute valuations remain in line with the 10-year average, relative valuations versus global markets are about one standard deviation below historical levels, positioning India for potential relative outperformance going forward. With valuations normalised and rates nearing stability, India could outperform global markets—though absolute returns will depend on how global imbalances resolve. #MutualFundSummit #MutualFundSummitLive #TrideepBhattacharya #EdelweissAMC #MarketValuations #InterestRates #IndiaMarkets #GlobalMarkets #EquityOutlook #PersonalFinanceIndia Moneycontrol is India’s leading financial portal, offering market news, expert analysis, and powerful tools.
