North Elementary's Art Jungle

When Stella Kleinsorge, a first grader at North Elementary School, first saw the school’s art jungle, she had trouble staying quiet in the newly-transformed hallway. Her excitement was so overwhelming as she looked around at the neon-glowing monkeys, butterflies, toucans, lizards, and other rainforest animals. Like all of the students at North, she was in awe. “I loved it so much when I first saw it…I’ve never reacted so excited like this,” Stella said. Guided by North Art Teacher Kim Silvey, students in each class created a different animal to transform the hallway into a jungle scene. Mrs. Silvey spent a three-day weekend installing a piece of art from each student, trees, vines, a Jeep full of the specials teachers and Principal Brandi Benz, and the black lights to make everything glow. “Especially the little people, they don’t realize what it’s going to be like. And then when they walk in here that first day, their eyes are just huge, and they’re so excited to look around,” Mrs. Silvey said. Because every student in the school has a piece of artwork hanging, the jungle is an art collection in which every student can take pride. “I felt like it was welcoming and it was cool how everybody worked together to put this together and Mrs. Silvey helped put it all up,” Tyler Eagan, fifth grade student, said. “...It makes me feel like I’m in an actual jungle.” Similar to North’s Art Ocean last school year, many fifth grade students gave up their recess to help Mrs. Silvey create special pieces of art for the jungle, such as the large flowers, leaves, and vines. For Tyler Eagan, helping during recess was his favorite part of working on the jungle. Mrs. Silvey adjusted her curriculum to meet learning standards while having students create something to go along with the jungle. “So, a lot of times, the kids don’t even have a clue that they’re learning something,” Mrs. Silvey said. “They think it’s a lot of fun and this is the end result for them.” Thank you to Mrs. Silvey for your 26 years of dedicated service to North Elementary!
