This is my compilation of Nick Glennie-Smith's score to We Were Soldiers. Listed below are the tracks I used, in order. 1 - Prelude (0:00) (Very dark in the beginning of the suite, this is not a happy story we are about to hear.) 2 - What is War? (0:53) (You get the snare that accompanies typical war but the fanfare is not there; instead, the composer uses darker tones and lower brass to vocalize war, which is a great metaphor because war is not glorious, it's dark, horrific and violent.) 3 - Look Around You (1:52) (This is the music that is playing when the soldiers leave their families to fight in this war that's not really even their fight. The ticking begins the time away from loved ones, there is no happy fanfare for the heroic men in arms.) 4 - Final Battle/Sgt. MacKenzie (4:53) (This song is featured three times in the film. I used the one from the final battle because of the drums and underlying feel of moving forward.) 5 - Look Around You (6:07) (Back to this track again, the darkness in the beginning of the track, used when Mel Gibson gives his speech, makes for a good transition into...) 6 - Photo Montage (7:28) (There is a writer who accompanies the platoon in this battle. He is not battle hardened, he sees war from the outside looking in, as most people do. He realizes what it is he is here to do and delivers the story that eventually becomes the book that this film is based on. Some ethnic instrumentation to play the main theme as if unifying the two countries.) 7 - Jack (9:53) (Jack represents the leader in all of us, the one to look after his troops and put their lives before his. It would only make sense that we lose him in the process.) 8 - Jack's Death (10:22) (It's a restatement of his theme but in a minor setting. It's war. Not all heroes make it home and that's a hard fact. This film focuses on war on both fronts: the soldiers serving and the families left behind.) 9 - Final Departure (11:51) (This does not cover the main character's return home, just that we came, we fought and nothing really was achieved. We see the enemy Commander come out and see the flag sitting in the remains of a tree stump, realizing that this is only the beginning. Unfortunately, war started far before that and has never had an end in sight. That is the ugly truth about this.) I do not own copyright on any of the music from We Were Soldiers, only ownership of this suite. Purchase We Were Soldiers by Nick Glennie-Smith on iTunes if you liked the score. It's a somber score that fits the tone of the film perfectly. I prefer to listen to the suite instead of the score because there are parts that sound like filler, but it has a lot of good tracks to listen to by themselves. There are a total of 17 tracks on the soundtrack and I only used music from 8 of them. As always, comments are welcome and encouraged.
