Invocation to Nyx (Ancient Greek Goddess of the Night) - new music, for the recreated ancient lyre... In ancient Greek mythology, Nyx was the goddess of the night, one of the primordial gods (protogenoi) who emerged as the dawn of creation. She was a child of Khaos (Chaos, Air), and coupling with Erebos (Darkness) she produced Aither (Aether, Light) and Hemera (Day). Alone she spawned a brood of dark spirits including the three Fates: Sleep, Death, Strife and Pain! This piece is a spontaneous improvisation on the very first lyre I first taught myself to play, back in January 2006...which I acquired on eBay! Rather like attempting to play a piece of furniture, since this factory made model was so heavily made, as an acoustic instrument, it was like trying to play a solid bodied electric guitar...unplugged! However, just as the magic of amplification & effects made the electric guitar the most versatile instrument of the 20th century, even a big clunky, chunky lyre like this one can be transformed into a sinister, dark-timbred beast worthy of invoking primeval ancient Greek dieties...with the aid of the modern magic spell, of audio editing! After recording the raw acoustic improvisation, I mixed and mastered the sound (with reverb sampled from the main stage at Wembley Arena!), then synchronised the mastered audio back in the original video, replacing the original muted acoustic audio with the mixed and mastered version; the dark intensity of sound further enhanced by the use of tuning my lyre in the focussed, much purer musical intervals of just intonation.
