It Came Upon the Midnight Clear (Agape) Edmund H. Sears, arr. Arnold B. Sherman Edmund Sears wrote this hymn text in 1849, directly following the Mexican American War and in the contentious decade before the American Civil War. While the background is obviously the story of the incarnation, the emphasis is on the need for the application of the love there revealed to contemporary life, particularly political issues of war and peace, abundance and want, as seen by the third stanza, often omitted from modern hymn collections: But with the woes of sin and strife the world has suffered long; Beneath the angel-strain have rolled two thousand years of wrong; And man, at war with man, hears not the love-song which they bring; Oh hush the noise, ye men of strife, and hear the angels sing.
