Hero Shooters are a saturated genre, so how do you make one stand out from the crowd? Overwatch did it through stylish character designs and good gameplay. Marvel Rivals worked off of a pre-existing IP and used cell shading to make everything pop. However, the story of these games rarely takes center stage. We’re here for the gameplay. Why is Tracer working with Widowmaker despite the lore stating that they’re enemies? Good question. Why can two versions of Captain America fight each other in Marvel Rivals? Multiversal shenanigans, who cares. However, what if you made the story and gameplay integration tighter, formed an entire world around 1940s noir and added a healthy dose of occultism to the root of the world? Valve’s Hero Shooter MOBA hybrid Deadlock is the answer, and its world is full of malevolent spirits, gates to other planes of existence and cryptids you could barely dream of. While other games have the lore as a niche interest on the side, Valve didn’t half ass it, to the point they’re adding in extensive Visual Novels to the game to explain who these characters are and what's going on. One such novel focuses on Lady Geist, the Sacrilegious Socialite. Housed inside of her arm is the malevolent spirit Oathkeeper which can extend her lifespan at the cost of others. Deadlock is an upcoming third-person shooter and multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) game developed and published by Valve. The game features two teams with six players, with the goal being to destroy the enemy "patron", a floating orb entity. Initially known as Neon Prime, Deadlock was first leaked to the public in May 2024 while its Steam page was published in August. It has since remained an invite-only game, reaching a concurrent player count of over 160,000 in September 2024.
