It’s an exciting time for cardiac imaging. “Imaging really is the cornerstone that helps us figure out what's going on with patients. We can monitor progress as we're treating them,” said Dr. Shant Manoushagian, Medical Director for Cardiac Imaging at GCMC. Imaging allows doctors to see the heart's function, structure, and blood flow. “Everything basically now is shifting towards imaging for us to see exactly where the problem is to pinpoint the therapy and make it a lot easier and a lot safer for the patients,” said Dr. Juan Gaztanaga, the Medical Director of Cardiac CT. Modalities like Non-Invasive CAT scans show doctors what’s going on inside the artery. “They can really pick up minimal amounts of plaque, which is very useful, because if we know that a patient has a minimal amount of plaque, we can start medications that kind of halt that process and hopefully prevent events, prevent heart attacks and strokes and things of that nature,” said Dr. Manoushagian. Imaging helps push patients in the right direction for diagnosis and treatment. “Now we have more tools to basically decrease unneeded testing, and more accurate testing, and less potential side effects. If you don't need something and we can do something else, we can avoid radiation, we can avoid contrast and or maybe avoid medications that we weren’t able to use before,” said Dr. Gaztanaga.
