We virtually welcomed Dr Siobhan O’Dwyer from the University of Birmingham, to present 'Understanding suicide and homicide risk in unpaid carers'. Many unpaid carers think about killing themselves or killing the person for whom they care. This seminar will present the latest evidence on suicide and homicide in carers and explore the factors that put carers (and those they care for) at risk. Drawing on the lived experience of carers, and recent homicide cases, the seminar will also consider the steps that local authorities, charities, and health & social care professionals can take to identify and support at-risk carers. About the presenter Siobhan O’Dwyer is Associate Professor of Social Care at the University of Birmingham. She has been leading research on suicide and homicide risk in unpaid carers for more than a decade, including studies of carers in Australia, the Netherlands, the USA, and the UK. Her research has informed policy and practice, and inspired critically acclaimed theatre and art.
